With Liverpool having the best part of five days to prepare for Thursday’s Europa League clash against LASK following the draw at Manchester City last weekend, Dominik Szoboszlai took the opportunity to pay a surprise visit to his former club RB Leipzig.

The Bundesliga outfit’s social media admins posted a video of the 23-year-old unexpectedly showing up at his old stomping ground, with the reaction of head coach Marco Rose a delight to witness.

It wasn’t just his former boss for whom the Hungarian had a warm greeting, either, as he was also seen welcoming Fabio Carvalho, who’s on loan at the Red Bull Arena from the Merseyside giants.

The two have yet to play together at Liverpool – Szoboszlai’s transfer to the Reds was confirmed two days after the 20-year-old completed his temporary exit from Anfield during the summer – but it seems that they’ve been keeping in touch to some extent, based on the interaction between the pair.

The irony is that the Hungary captain’s scintillating displays could make it very tough for the ex-Fulham youngster to displace him once he returns to Jurgen Klopp’s side, but clearly any element of competitiveness between the duo comes with a great mutual respect.

One Liverpool youngster is set to be given a welcome opportunity to start during a loan spell which, in the words of one journalist, has been ‘hard’ for him so far.

Fabio Carvalho is spending the 2023/24 campaign at RB Leipzig after struggling to establish himself in the first team at his parent club, but a change of scenery hasn’t necessarily brought about a change of fortunes.

The 21-year-old has played just 44 minutes across the Bundesliga team’s six matches so far this season, with that limited game-time accrued in three substitute appearances (Transfermarkt).

However, when Marco Rose’s side face German second tier outfit Wehen Wiesbaden in cup action next week, that should open the door for the attacker to get his first start for his current side.

In his latest column for CaughtOffside, Christian Falk wrote: “In Fabio Carvalho’s position, Dani Olmo normally plays. He’s injured but there are other more experienced players available like Emil Forsberg and Christoph Baumgartner, so it’s not easy for him.

“Marco Rose will rotate his team in the coming matches and everyone thinks Carvalho will get his chance in the starting-XI when Leipzig play Wehen Wiesbaden in the DFB Pokal. It’s hard for him at the moment, as there’s plenty of competition.”

Little more than a year ago, Carvalho’s future at Liverpool seemed bright, having scored in consecutive Premier League games against Bournemouth and Newcastle, the latter being a 98th-minute winner at Anfield.

However, it proved to be something of a false dawn as he dropped out of the first-team frame later in the season, hence the loan move to Leipzig in search of a fresh start.

It quite hasn’t happed for him yet in Germany even with the injury to Olmo, so if the youngster gets opportunities such as the one for which he’s been earmarked in the DFB Pokal next Wednesday, he simply has to make the most of it.

The route back into contention at Liverpool won’t be easy given the sheer level of competition in midfield and up front at Anfield, but a change of circumstances could possibly open the door for Carvalho in the future.

Some circumstances will be outside his control, but whenever he’s given his opportunity by Rose, it’s up to the 21-year-old to take it. That’ll be his best chance of getting a prolonged run of games in Leipzig and, in turn, impressing sufficiently to convince Klopp of his long-term worth to the Reds.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool had made ‘calls’ in January about the possibility of signing Josko Gvardiol when he was at RB Leipzig.

Despite being linked with the player intermittently for numerous months, the Reds saw him complete a £77.6m move to Manchester City over the weekend (Sky Sports).

It wasn’t for the want of trying from the Merseysiders, but having received a firm hands-off message from the Bundesliga club in the winter, the focus moved to other transfer targets.

As Romano explained on the Here We Go Podcast on Saturday: “Liverpool have always been really interested in Josko Gvardiol.

“In January they did some calls to understand the situation around the player, if there was a possibility to approach Leipzig, maybe to find a creative formula to sign the player. But Leipzig said ‘no way, the player is not for sale in January.’

“Liverpool decided to focus on different targets and to invest their money in different positions, in the midfield especially this summer – we know they changed a lot.”

Despite Liverpool’s long-standing interest in Gvardiol before his move to Man City, the finances always seemed prohibitive for the Reds, with Leipzig having reportedly been demanding in the region of £80m for the 21-year-old (Football Insider).

The Anfield giants may have been able to go big on the Croatian in different circumstances, but with such a large-scale rebuilding job needed on their midfield this summer, there was never going to be scope for a marquee addition elsewhere.

Aside from the obvious annoyance of seeing a long-time transfer target moving to an already imperious domestic rival, Jurgen Klopp will be frustrated to have missed out on the player for other reasons.

Gvardiol would’ve filled the left-footed centre-back niche in the Liverpool squad and, at just 21, would’ve been regarded as the long-term successor to new captain Virgil van Dijk at the heart of defence.

That’s not to mention his billing as one of the leading players in his position in Europe, having starred for Croatia in last year’s World Cup. Indeed, his national team boss Zlatko Dalic had even dubbed him the world’s best central defender, hailing his maturity and ‘elegance’ (talkSPORT).

It’s a classic case of what could’ve been for the Reds, but with less than a month remaining in the summer transfer window, Jorg Schmadtke and co must press ahead with realistic pursuits rather than wallowing in self-pity over the 21-year-old’s move to the Etihad Stadium.

Fabio Carvalho has revealed that he and Jurgen Klopp hadn’t spoken much prior to the youngster’s loan exit from Liverpool last month.

The 20-year-old will spend the upcoming campaign at RB Leipzig as he seeks regular game-time, having been largely frustrated on that front at Anfield last season, playing just eight minutes in the Premier League following the World Cup break (Transfermarkt).

As per The Athletic, the player has said that the manager hadn’t given him any words of advice prior to departing for Germany, although he didn’t view that as a negative.

Carvalho stated of Klopp: “I don’t really speak to him, so he didn’t give me any advice. I have to just learn as I go and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I feel like that’s better anyway, for me to mature as a person and as a player.”

It’s surprising to hear Carvalho saying that he doesn’t speak much with Klopp, for you’d imagine that players would be in regular dialogue with their manager, even if they’re not an integral member of the first team.

Despite the youngster rarely featuring last season and discussions over a possible loan exit in January, his application on the training ground didn’t waver, something for which his boss praised him publicly (The Athletic).

His move to Leipzig presents him with an opportunity to hear a fresh voice in Marco Rose, who hopefully will give the 20-year-old the game-time he’s been lacking at Liverpool and enable the attacker to develop as a player at senior level.

Even though Carvalho had fallen to the periphery at Anfield, it was telling that the Reds didn’t want to lose him permanently amid interest in a full transfer last month, which suggests that they see him as a valuable long-term presence.

Moving to Germany has taken the youngster out of his comfort zone, and ideally he’ll return to Merseyside next year all the better for the experience and fully ready to make his mark at his parent club.

Amid all the attention over the last week on midfielders Liverpool could bring in, the Reds are also continuing to monitor prospective additions for their defence.

Levi Colwill has been one of the most frequently cited targets, but the cruciate ligament injury to his Chelsea centre-back teammate Wesley Fofana has effectively ended any realistic hopes of signing the England under-21 gem.

The Daily Express named five potential alternatives that Jurgen Klopp could consider, one of whom is Castello Lukeba.

Liverpool are believed to have watched the Lyon defender firsthand, but they may need to move quickly if they want to sign him amid reports from Sky Germany of an imminent €30m (£25m) agreement with RB Leipzig as they seek to replace Manchester-City bound Josko Gvardiol.

Reds fans who may have been eager to keep an eye on one of the club’s transfer targets in Khephren Thuram at the recent European Under-21 Championship would also have seen Lukeba in action for France.

He started in all four of their games at the finals and has been a regular in Ligue 1 over the past couple of seasons, featuring 58 times in the French top flight and scoring four goals (Transfermarkt).

Like Colwill, the 20-year-old is predominantly left-footed, a trait Liverpool don’t have among their current centre-back options, so he could fill a notable niche in Klopp’s squad.

Although Lukeba isn’t particularly strong in the tackle or aerially, ranking among the bottom 26% of positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues for both metrics, he makes up for it with his magnificent average of 2.26 interceptions per 90 (FBref).

That places him in the top 1% of centre-backs in the continent for that particular quality, with the Frenchman effortlessly winning possession for his team by cutting out opposition attacks with a perfectly-timed extension of his legs.

At £25m, he’d be a modestly priced option who could grow into being a key figure for Liverpool over the next decade and may be worth considering now that Colwill seems unattainable.

Can Klopp and the Anfield recruitment team pull off a late hijack for the Leipzig target?

German football reporter Christian Falk has said that Dominik Szoboszlai showed ‘a lot of promise’ during his time at RB Leipzig but isn’t yet a ‘superstar’.

The 22-year-old recently completed a £60m move to Liverpool from the Bundesliga outfit (BBC Sport), who also sold Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea this year.

Speaking to CaughtOffside, Falk suggested that the Reds’ newest recruit wasn’t perceived as quite as big a loss to Germany’s top flight as the new Stamford Bridge attacker, although the Hungarian still holds the potential to become a genuine star.

The journalist said: “Dominik Szoboszlai held a lot of promise in the Bundesliga but it was harder for the league to lose Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea as he was already a star in the Bundesliga, whereas Szoboszlai was on the way to this point.

“I think he brought some good money for RB Leipzig. They will reinvest the Nkunku money into a deal for Lois Openda of Lens and they are searching for a Szoboszlai replacement. Szoboszlai is a really good player but he’s not a superstar already; how good he will be we will see in the future.”

Perhaps Liverpool’s new number 8 isn’t regarded as ‘superstar’ material just yet, but his potential to become one would be in keeping with some of the standout transfers of Jurgen Klopp’s reign at Anfield.

The likes of Mo Salah, Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane wouldn’t have been held up as elite-level names who all of Europe’s top clubs were tripping over themselves to sign at the time of their respective arrivals on Merseyside, but they all grew into world-class performers under the German.

An outlay of £60m indicates that Szoboszlai is a serious talent rather than it being a total punt on a largely unproven player, but the hope for the Reds’ hierarchy will be that the fee will come to be judged as money very well spent.

A fair comparison here could be the £67m invested in the Brazilian goalkeeper five years ago (Sky Sports), which would’ve been considered a huge show of faith at the time but has since proven to be worth every last penny.

Klopp has a reputation for moulding superstars rather than buying them, and hopefully that’s exactly what’ll happen with the Hungary playmaker over the course of his time at Liverpool.

According to reports from Germany, RB Leipzig managed to extract an extra few million from Liverpool for Dominik Szoboszlai due to a cleverly-worked rejigging of his release clause.

BILD reported that the Bundesliga club have bankrolled €70m (£60m) from the transfer, which is €15m (£12.8m) more than his original release clause.

When he signed for the Red Bull-owned outfit in January 2021, he penned a deal until 2026 which included that initial clause, but a long-term injury meant that he didn’t play until the following season.

Nonetheless, that summer saw Leipzig extend his contract as they were so convinced of his ability, and that decision has now come back to reward Marco Rose’s side.

That’s because, under the terms of the new deal, the release clause was ‘dynamically inclined’, i.e. moved back by one year so that it would expire this summer rather than in 2022, in what BILD described as an astute ‘trick’.

Had it not been for that crafty piece of fine print, Liverpool could’ve signed Szoboszlai for roughly 20% less than the actual price paid for him.

READ MORE: Neil Jones names Liverpool star who’ll be ‘licking his lips’ over Reds’ summer transfer activity

You have to hand it to Leipzig – that was a very clever piece of work by those tasked with handling their contractual affairs, even if it did require a massive leap of faith seeing as the Hungarian hadn’t played for the club at the time it was agreed.

They must’ve been wholly convinced by what they saw of him at sister outfit Red Bull Salzburg prior to his move to the Bundesliga, and their standpoint was justified based on what he produced in Germany, where he claimed 42 goal contributions in 91 appearances (Transfermarkt).

He also earned a reputation as a player with an exceptional work ethic, as evidenced by testimonies from his former coach Gerhard Struber and some close confidantes of Jurgen Klopp who briefed the Liverpool manager before the recent transfer to Anfield.

If the Reds had managed to sign Szoboszlai for just £47.2m, that would’ve represented a seriously sharp piece of business, but such is the 22-year-old’s promise that even the reported £60m investment seems like it’ll be money well spent.

Liverpool supporters will not be too surprised to hear that Fabio Carvalho has left the club on loan but his comments after being announced as an RB Leipzig player reveal why he was tempted by a move to Germany.

Speaking with his new team’s official website, the 20-year-old said: “My aim is to play as much as possible – in the league, in the cup and above all in the UEFA Champions League.

“RB Leipzig stands for giving young players exactly this opportunity to and that’s why the club is perfect for me to be able to develop further.”

READ MORE: Time ticking for Liverpool to beat UEFA transfer deadline in Szoboszlai deal; not his ‘€70m release clause’

It seems clear from these comments that the former Fulham man was disappointed with the lack of opportunities handed to him at Anfield and that has been a major motivator in his decision to leave the club.

Although the deal is only on loan, whispers around this move seemed to suggest that the Portugal-born midfielder was happy to leave the club on a permanent basis but it was us who wanted to ensure that he remained our player.

The best case scenario seems to be that the talented young player thrives in the Bundesliga and then comes back to Merseyside with more confidence and game time under his belt.

Whether we can convince the player that he should consider his future as a Red, is another thing all together but for now – let’s hope that this move goes well.

Even if this does ultimately prove to be just a makeweight in the deal for Dominik Szoboszlai, we all wish Fabio the very best for the new season.

Liverpool have reportedly agreed to loan out Fabio Carvalho to RB Leipzig for the 2023/24 season.

Following a tweet from Fabrizio Romano on Friday morning which hinted that the prospective move could be done ‘next week’, 90min claimed that the Reds have agreed a straight loan deal with the Bundesliga outfit, with no purchase option or obligation included.

Anfield chiefs were seemingly eager to retain the 20-year-old for pre-season at least in order to allow Jurgen Klopp the chance to decide on the player’s short-term future, but the youngster wanted the situation resolved at the earliest opportunity and now looks set to get closure.

Carvalho’s departure for Liverpool had been on the cards for some time, with several English clubs having also shown an interest in signing him, but it’s Leipzig who seem to have won the race to acquire him for the forthcoming campaign.

It’s probably the best scenario the Reds could’ve hoped for if there was no realistic chance of keeping the player on Merseyside, and not just because the structure of the deal means the club won’t relinquish any control over his future.

By loaning him to the Red Bull-owned outfit, Klopp’s team have ensured the 20-year-old won’t be in direct competition with his parent club next season, while he’ll also get to play in the Champions League with Marco Rose’s side, who qualified for the competition once again.

Liverpool will also get their wish of not offloading him permanently, and doing so after only one year at the club (and precious little opportunity to prove his worth) would’ve seemed rather foolhardy.

It should be to everyone’s benefit that Carvalho’s immediate future now seems decided, with the player hopefully getting greater scope for game-time while still competing at a high level, and the Reds retaining ownership of a talented young footballer instead of dispensing with him outright.

There’s been plenty of discourse about Carvalho’s future over the past month or so, but this appears to be the most conclusive update so far, with a move to Leipzig seeming imminent.

That it’s come from a source as trusted and reliable as Romano also adds credence to the probability of the 20-year-old spending the 2023/24 season in Germany with Marco Rose’s side.

It’ll come as no great surprise that the player looks set to move, having seen his game-time at Liverpool recede dramatically – he’s played 75 minutes of first-team football in 2023, 66 of which came during an FA Cup third round replay against Wolves in January (Transfermarkt).

Podcaster Jack Collins went as far as to claim that Carvalho has been ‘deeply unhappy’ with the Reds, feeling ‘let down’ and wanting to ‘get out of there’.

Only the player himself could vouch for whether that’s actually the case, although he may well see the prospect of joining Leipzig on loan – and possibly playing in the Champions League next season – as far more attractive than spending several more months on the periphery at Anfield.

At least the reported absence of a purchase option means Liverpool won’t be letting go of a talented young player completely, and ideally he’d come back from his year in Germany a much more rounded footballer who’s truly ready to become a stalwart in Jurgen Klopp’s first team.

Most attention this summer will be spent on who will be arriving at the club but there may well be just as much drama on who is leaving Liverpool this summer and one name keeps being mentioned.

As reported David Lynch for Football Insider: ‘RB Leipzig are returning with a second bid for Fabio Carvalho despite Liverpool signalling their reluctance to sell’.

It’s been widely reported that the former Fulham man hasn’t been enjoying the lack of game time in his maiden Anfield campaign and it seems clear that he’s pushing for a swift departure from the club.

With Jurgen Klopp labeling the 20-year-old as a ‘role model’ because of his behaviour in training, it’s quite obvious that the manager has a lot of respect for his player but it may not be fully reciprocated.

If RB Leipzig continue to push for a move and the Portugal-born attacker wants to leave, it may prove to be the best for everyone that he is granted his wishes.

Let’s just hope for the sake of the former Benfica academy starlet that he doesn’t end up regretting trying to force a way out of Merseyside, if he is indeed doing so in this moment in time.

Cryptic social media antics and public courting from other clubs though does suggest that all is not well for a young man who has yet to be given the chance to make his mark with the Reds.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool don’t want to sell Fabio Carvalho this summer, in the wake of reported interest from RB Leipzig.

The Bundesliga club had submitted a bid for the 20-year-old earlier this week, but this was rejected by the Reds (The Guardian).

The Italian transfer guru has spoken to GIVEMESPORT to share the latest on the situation, with the Anfield club seeking an alternative ‘solution’ to parting with the midfielder completely.

Romano outlined: “RB Leipzig are really pushing to sign him. RB Leipzig really appreciate the player, so they want Fábio Carvalho.

“They want to sign him on a permanent deal, but Liverpool are still trying to find a different kind of solution because they don’t want to lose control of the player.”

It makes total sense that Liverpool wouldn’t want to jettison Carvalho for good, having only signed him from Fulham a year ago and seeing as he’s still so young.

A loan exit could be worth considering if Jurgen Klopp wants the 20-year-old to get more game-time and isn’t able to give him that at Anfield, with the player getting a paltry eight minutes of Premier League football this side of the World Cup break last winter (Transfermarkt).

Another option raised in a report by The Guardian is a sale with the inclusion of a buyback clause, although Romano’s assertion that the Reds are reluctant to ‘lose control’ of him would suggest that they’d rather avoid a permanent transfer of any kind.

Ian Doyle mentioned in a recent Q&A for the Liverpool Echo that Carvalho’s displays in pre-season could be pivotal in determining whether he’s kept at his current club or allowed to depart on loan, and the youngster deserves to be given that window to prove his worth to his manager.

If given that opportunity, though, he must make the most of it if he’s to give himself the best chance of staying at Anfield for the 2023/24 season at least.

Paul Joyce has revealed the hitherto unnamed club who had made an offer to Liverpool to sign Fabio Carvalho.

On Monday, both Fabrizio Romano (via Twitter) and David Lynch (Football Insider) had reported of a bid being presented to the Reds to acquire the 20-year-old permanently, noting that it came from a team in the Champions League but not specifying who it had been.

Another reporter has now removed the veil as to the origin of that offer, with Joyce stating for The Times that it came from RB Leipzig, only for it to be ‘dismissed as derisory’, despite claims elsewhere of a ‘big-money’ bid being tabled.

This report added that Liverpool will ‘resist permanent offers’ for Carvalho and are expected to take a ‘hardline stance’ but could be receptive to loan proposals, with Jurgen Klopp set to take the player’s preferences on board in deciding his immediate future.

Joyce’s article backs up one by Caoimhe O’Neill for The Athletic which indicated that the Reds aren’t interested in selling the 20-year-old but could sanction a loan exit, so it appears as if any notion of a permanent transfer is off the table for now.

Whether RB Leipzig would be open to taking the ex-Fulham youngster on a temporary basis rather than signing him outright is debatable, but their previous dealings with the Merseysiders could work in their favour.

Liverpool have signed both Naby Keita and Ibrahima Konate from the Bundesliga club, while also raiding sister outfit Red Bull Salzburg for Takumi Minamino.

Furthermore, the German side’s current goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi was in the books at Anfield previously, so there’s been plenty of crossover between the two clubs in recent years.

It’s not unthinkable that the Reds could be willing to let Carvalho join Leipzig on loan if he’s possibly used as a bargaining chip to bring a player in the opposite direction, with Josko Gvardiol, Dani Olmo and Dominik Szoboszlai all mentioned as possible Merseyside targets in recent weeks.

However, there’d be little point in loaning him there unless he’d be assured of regular game-time, so Liverpool would need to consider any such proposition very carefully.

Following reports in recent days that Liverpool had scouts present at RB Leipzig’s win over Bayern Munich last Saturday, it’s been claimed that one player who featured in the match is ‘ready’ for a move to Merseyside.

According to 90min, the Reds were keeping an eye on Dani Olmo and Dominik Szoboszlai, with the latter now seemingly very much of interest at Anfield.

European journalist Daniel Nielson has taken to Twitter to share news of the Hungary attacker, who scored in his team’s victory at the Allianz Arenal last weekend.

The reporter tweeted: “Been told that Szoboszlai is also a potential target for Liverpool as they look for Mount alternatives to avoid any major bidding wars.

“Would likely cost £45m + bonuses, with player ready to make the switch to Merseyside, however won’t force any moves. He is happy at Leipzig.”

Szoboszlai is a name that’ll be familiar to Liverpool fans from previous transfer links in 2020 (Daily Mail), having also come up against the Reds in the Champions League round of 16 the following year.

Already the captain of his national team at just 22, the Hungarian has a fine return of nine goals and 13 assists in 44 games this season, lining out primarily on the right wing but also capable of playing on the other flank and in a number 10 role (Transfermarkt).

At a minimum of £45m, he won’t exactly come cheap, but that’s still significantly lower than the £85m that Chelsea are reportedly demanding for Mason Mount, with Jacque Talbot reporting for Football Transfers that the Reds could duly turn their focus towards more economical midfield targets.

The update from Nielson suggests that Szoboszlai is being professional enough not to force his way out of Leipzig, but also open to a possible move to Liverpool if a tempting offer is presented to the Bundesliga club.

With nearly 250 senior appearances at club and international level combined (Transfermarkt), he already has a wealth of experience for someone of his age, while the likelihood is that it’ll still be another couple of years before he enters his peak footballing years.

If Mount proves unattainable for Liverpool, the Hungary captain could be well worth considering for Jurgen Klopp this summer.
