If you watch carefully, the actual problem arises after Liverpool go 2-0 up. In the lead up to RM scoring their first, Gakpo fails to press the defender, this in turn prevents all those behind him from being able to press, so RM are able to get the ball to Vinicius on the edge of Liverpool’s box without any Liverpool player having come close to pressuring them. It’s not Gakpo’s fault, he arrived a few weeks ago. He doesn’t (yet) understand the significance of the behaviour of players when we don’t have the ball. You might recall it took 6 months for Robbo and Fabinho to be allowed to play when they first arrived. The management wanted them to be fully aware of their roles. It’s not a lack of physicality, as when pressing works correctly, the players actually end up having to do less running. It’s easy to see, however, the partisan pundits and ex-players are not the ones who we should look to for answers you only hear them talk with their own agendas front and centre. The simple fact is the club did not see Fabinho AND Henderson’s abilities falling off a cliff at the same time. FSG took the gamble and got it wrong. Everything will actually be fine at the club, everything will work again, but it needs fresh talent in the midfield and a full pre season to get everything understood by the (new) players. YNWA.
