A good result on Merseyside and a perfect end to the evening overall as elsewhere results fell in Liverpool’s favour to see them safely through to the knockouts in the Europa League.

Alexis Mac Allister’s brother, Kevin, and Royal Union St. Gilloise helped secure a goalless draw in France to ensure the Reds won their group with a game to spare.

Whilst plenty is sure to be written about the number of goals the hosts could (and should) have gone on to score at Anfield, credit is due for the defensive display on show from Joe Gomez and Co.

Liverpool’s squad delivers yet again

Wow. Just wow. We mentioned Harvey Elliott not that long ago after the Englishman showcased his creative powers against the Austrian outfit.

But goodness gracious – we can’t overlook just how integral our former Charlton Athletic prospect was, first as a right-back, and secondly slotting in alongside Jarell Quansah following the first round of substitutions.

The 26-year-old won 100% of the ground duels he engaged in and offered a creative outlet out wide.

What more could you ask from one of our underrated fringe stars?

Theo Squires was intrigued by something he noticed on the Liverpool teamsheet that UEFA have given to journalists at tonight’s Europa League game against LASK.

As expected, Jurgen Klopp has made numerous changes, with only Mo Salah and Kostas Tsimikas retained from last weekend’s draw at Manchester City.

The Greece international will play at left-back, although there appears to be some confusion as to who’ll line up at the other side of the defensive quartet.

In the Liverpool Echo‘s live matchday blog (19:10), Squires wrote: “Our UEFA teamsheets have just been handed out, and they have Jarell Quansah at right-back and Joe Gomez in the middle.

“While Quansah can play there, having filled the role at the Academy and made one senior appearance on the flanks as a substitute this season, I suspect they might have got those two the wrong way round tonight.”

READ MORE: ‘Great to see…’ – Liverpool journalist delighted with ‘excellent’ Reds news ahead of kick-off

READ MORE: ‘Few come close’: Paul Merson says 25-y/o Liverpool player is absolutely unstoppable on the ball

As Squires pointed out, Quansah has occasionally played at right-back while progressing through the academy ranks, and he had a fleeting appearance in that position against Brentford earlier this month (Transfermarkt).

However, Gomez is far more accustomed to playing out wide than the 20-year-old, so we also reckon that the UEFA teamsheet got those two players mixed up.

Perhaps it isn’t an error and Klopp has spotted something which has prompted him to deploy a curious tactical switch, although we doubt that he’d experiment to that degree considering that Liverpool still need more points to ensure their progression in the tournament.

Whatever the case might be, we’ll get our definitive answer when the match begins at 8pm UK time.

Klopp has already won every major trophy possible as Liverpool manager, but there is hope that that the former Borussia Dortmund boss can do it all over again with a refreshed squad.

The Anfield outfit have started the campaign strongly, sitting three points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City, top of their Europa League group and into the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

Gomez, who has wore the armband on numerous occasions this term, admits that missing out on the league title by a single point on two separate occasions has been draining for him and his teammates but he’s excited about what the future holds for the Reds.

Joe Gomez has stressed his disappointment at Liverpool’s 3-2 Europa League defeat to Toulouse but has admitted the Reds didn’t deserve anything from the game.

Jurgen Klopp made nine changes from the side that drew 1-1 with Luton at the weekend with Gomez and Alexis Mac Allister the only players to retain their spots in the starting XI.

Our No. 2, who wore the armband during the first half, spoke with honesty after the game – admitting it would be easy for him and his teammates to ‘moan and complain’ about the controversial VAR decision to rule out Jarrell Quansah’s late equaliser, rather than to focus on their own disappointing performance.

“It’s obviously disappointing, we never quite got control of the game,” the defender said (as quoted by Liverpool Echo). “Obviously they went in front and then we never really got control of the game.

“They made it difficult for us with the atmosphere but it’s on us. It’s frustrating that the decision didn’t go for us but we shouldn’t have been in this position in the first place.

READ MORE: Alexis Mac Allister admits Liverpool’s defeat at Toulouse was ‘a fair result’ despite ‘weird’ VAR controversy

“I think everyone is obviously complaining about it but we have to control the game and it’s easy for us to moan and complain about the decision but I think they will look at it and if it’s a goal, it’s a goal and if it’s not, it’s not. It is what it is and we can’t control that.

“All we can do is not be in this position to begin with and not be chasing the game at that point so we have to work on it and go again in the next game.”

It was obviously disappointing to be denied a late equaliser, as Gomez has pointed out, but we firstly need to look at our own performance.

Toulouse deserved all three points. They played the game like it was a cup final with intensity and passion all over the pitch.

The same could not be said for Klopp’s side, however, with a number of lacklustre performances – most notably from Kostas Tsimikas and Wataru Endo.

We need a reaction against Brentford at Anfield on Sunday before we make the difficult trip to the Etihad the following weekend.

Joe Gomez is Liverpool’s longest serving player and is appreciated for a wide array of talents he possesses, however it’s fair to say that goal scoring is probably not one of them.

In 183 appearances for the Reds, our No.2 has failed to score a goal for us but that didn’t stop him trying his best to beat Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby.

With the ball bouncing kindly after his own flick in the Everton box, the 26-year-old unleashed an effort on goal and unfortunately it resulted in a throw-in to the Blues.

In appreciation for how wayward the shot was, when cameras panned to the former Charlton Athletic teenager he could be seen to have a wry smile on his face – probably contemplating if he’ll ever find the back of the net for Jurgen Klopp’s side!

Joe Gomez has been at Anfield longer than anyone else in the Liverpool dressing room and he’s been speaking about his relationship with two Dutchmen, one a current teammate and one now playing his football elsewhere.

Speaking with liverpoolfc.com, our No.2 was asked about Virgil van Dijk and said: “Aside from the football, he’s just a good person. Gini [Wijnaldum] was the [introduction], because they were both Dutch and I was close with Gini as well so it was just naturally formed.

“We’d speak, the three of us, meet up and stuff. Then when Gini left we just grew closer. Good guy.

“And obviously I’ve learned a lot from him, off the pitch and as people. It’s nice to have someone like that you can lean upon.”

It’s interesting to hear how close our defender was with Gini Wijnaldum in the 18 months they were at the club together, before we signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the 2018 January window.

The midfielder who is now plying his trade with Jordan Henderson at Al-Ettifaq under the stewardship of Steven Gerrard, left the Reds two years ago and it’s clear that a tight trio has turned into a formidable duo.

With both central defenders experiencing terrible injuries in the same campaign, no doubt this provided them with an opportunity to grow even closer.

It’s clear that the England international is now one of the more experienced members of the dressing room and his bond with our captain shows how trusted he is by other senior members of the squad.

Joe Gomez is Liverpool’s longest serving first-team player and the only one at the club who was signed by Brendan Rodgers, meaning he has a unique understanding of the difference Jurgen Klopp has made since 2015.

Speaking with liverpoolfc.com, the defender shared his thoughts on the German: “I think he knows that there’s gratitude, massively so.

“From the whole team and then on a personal note he knows, going through the injuries and him having the faith to see that I can rebuild myself and be a player that wants to play for him and impact the team, that’s forever.

“It’s probably something that I’ll look back on after as well. I’m lucky to have had a gaffer like him for this period of time, I know it’s not something to take for granted.”

It’s great to hear how level-headed the former Charlton Athletic man is and it’s clear that he understands and respects what his boss has done for him, since his arrival eight years ago.

You can also see here that the England international is scarred by the injury issues of the past and is now happy to feature less often on the pitch, as it means his body is being correctly looked after.

Our No.2’s ability to perform as a centre-back, right-back and in the new inverted full-back role has come through coaching from the former Borussia Dortmund gaffer and that shows the huge talent of both men.

This is a showing of mutual respect too and we’re sure the manager will have nothing but kind words to say in response to our versatile defender.

One Liverpool defender, who Jurgen Klopp has previously labelled as ‘sensational’ (as quoted by Liverpoolfc.com), has admitted he was close to joining RB Leipzig instead of the Reds back in 2015.

The Anfield outfit signed Joe Gomez from Charlton in a deal worth £3.5m but the London-born centre half visited Germany but both he and his family didn’t feel that the move was right for him at the time.

He instead made the decision to move to Merseyside where he’s won every major trophy possible and is now the club’s longest serving player.

“In the January [of 2015], I went to Red Bull Leipzig,” Gomez told On The Judy Podcast (via Metro).

“I had only played half a season, they were still in the Bundesliga 2. In hindsight, they are a great club but I wasn’t ready.

“I went with my mum, my dad and my missus wasn’t feeling it either. I knew I wasn’t ready, but the opportunity to go came up.

“If you play in Germany [today], the likelihood is you’re coming back. At the time, for me, there weren’t many examples of that yet. Maybe today I would be like, ‘wow, this is the way’.”

Gomez admitted that there was also interest in his signature from Bournemouth and Aston Villa at the time, but following a conversation with then Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers it was a straightforward decision for him.

The England international added: “I met Brendan [Rodgers] and I always had a soft spot for Liverpool. As a club, it had a warmth to it. I met Brendan and he was a likeable person.”

He may not be a regular starter under Klopp but he’s more than capable of doing a job when needed, whether that be as a central defender or as a full-back.

Players such as Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho have all thrived after leaving England for Germany as youngsters so it would’ve been interesting to see how Gomez would’ve fared had he made the switch to Saxony.

Fabio Carvalho is currently on loan from Liverpool at RB Leipzig so let’s hope he can benefit from his time in the Undesligfa.

Joe Gomez has admitted his admiration for the Anfield atmosphere and explained how the Liverpool supporters really can prove to be the twelfth man.

The 26-year-old is now our longest serving player and has been involved in some massive games for the club.

He’s therefore aware of the power of Anfield and the impact it can have on opposition players when they visit L4.

“When Anfield’s on it, it’s tough bro,” our No. 2 told On The Judy Podcast.

“When they’re up for it, like European nights or title deciders, it’s the twelfth man. It’s cliche but it’s real.

“Because when you’re on the pitch and that’s happening you can’t ignore it man.”

He added: “I definitely don’t think it’s an easy place to go for the opposition, for sure.”

Joe Gomez has named the toughest opponents he has faced during his footballing career.

The 26-year-old joined Liverpool from Charlton back in the summer of 2015 and has featured in some massive games for the club having won every major trophy possible with the Anfield outfit.

The defender, who is now our longest serving player, included a former Reds attacker who left the club for a Premier League rival the same summer Gomez moved to Merseyside.

When asked which opponent has given him the longest day, Gomez told On The Judy Podcast“[Leroy] Sane when he was at Manchester City, direct. The whole game I know it’s a long game. There’s not as many direct wingers, Wilfried Zaha is still of the nature. Sane, Raheem, Wilf, those wingers that are just direct.”

Gomez is predominantly a central defender but has been deployed as a right back on numerous occasions down the years.

The London-born talent is a quality player on his day but has struggled with injuries and finding consistency during his time on Merseyside.

It’s interesting that the three opponents the Englishman has named are all wingers rather than strikers, which does suggest that he may struggle when operating at full-back rather than centrally.

Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and Wilfried Zaha are all blessed with pace so it’s perhaps not that much of a surprise that they are the players the England international named.

Joe Gomez has highlighted the work that one of his Liverpool teammates puts in both on and off the pitch and has insisted the player will become a ‘legend at the club’.

It’s not easy to become a Liverpool legend but Mo Salah is already recognised as one by most Reds supporters having won every major trophy at the club and last season becoming our record Premier League goalscorer.

Gomez has claimed that despite our No. 11’s ability and the silverware he’s already collected, he still remains humble and sets the highest of standards for himself.

“There’s nobody in the dressing room that trains as though they are big time, because everyone is accountable. If they aren’t applying themselves, nobody can not do it,” Gomez told On The Judy Podcast (via The Boot Room).

“What Mo has done, he’s going to be a legend at the club, but he still applies himself and he works hard every day, he’s in the gym an hour before, and he does everything.”

Salah has started the campaign in terrific fashion with six goals and four assists in 10 appearances (across all competitions).

He’s probably the first name on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet and is always available.

The former Roma man is now 31 years of age but seems to be getting fitter and fitter each year and there’s currently no sign of deterioration.

Clubs in Saudi Arabia were interested in his signature in the summer but he and his agent insisted he was only focussed on Liverpool and his current deal which expires in the summer of 2025.

We’re not sure what more the forward can do to become a legend at the club at the club if he’s not already one but wouldn’t mind seeing him fire us towards more silverware this term.

Virgil van Dijk may well be wondering how a near-replica of the incident which saw him sent off against Newcastle last month went unpunished in Liverpool’s defeat at Tottenham on Saturday evening.

In one of numerous incidents from the game in north London which summed up the calamitous performance of the refereeing team, Micky van de Ven appeared to narrowly win the ball ahead of Joe Gomez in a 50-50.

There was contact between the two players as they crashed into each other, with the Spurs defender grimacing as he fell to the turf.

The incident sparked echoes of the one which saw Van Dijk dismissed at St James’ Park five weeks ago when, despite him appearing to get a toe to the ball, he was adjudged to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity and duly shown a red card.

In a nutshell, there is the inconsistency of Premier League refereeing.

You can view the clip of Van de Ven’s tackle below, via @MrBoywunder on Twitter/X:

The total absence of Joe Gomez from the Liverpool squad set to face Leicester City in the Carabao Cup could represent a bad omen for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

More specifically, a worrying indication that Trent Alexander-Arnold may not yet be ready to start for the Reds in their next fixture – a trip to London to face Ange Postecoglu’s high-flying Tottenham side.

“Nights off altogether for Alisson, Joe Gomez, Andy Robertson, and Mohamed Salah,” Theo Squires wrote in the Echo’s live matchday blog.

“When you can still call upon Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Virgil van Dijk, in reserve, Liverpool should have more than enough to get the job done tonight.

“Gomez’s absence is interesting though. He’s had a great start to the season, but could hint that Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t necessarily going to be fit to start away at Spurs this weekend.”

It has yet to be confirmed by the club if this theory is anywhere near close to the truth, though it’s also worth bearing in mind that the 26-year-old isn’t the only notable admission from the matchday squad.

The No.66 had recently returned to training after making progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained in the 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

Another absence ahead of our clash with Spurs at the weekend would be a big blow, especially bearing in mind how tough a game it looks from the outset.

To be completely fair to our backup options, however, Gomez has performed outstandingly well despite the absence of our first-choice right-back and Virgil van Dijk prior to our 3-1 win over West Ham United.

There’s no question we’ll be rejoicing at the potential sight of Trent back in action at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, though no one should be throwing toys out of the pram should our No.2 be asked to slot into the backline once more.

Virgil van Dijk has lauded the impact Joe Gomez has had on Liverpool in his absence in the backline.

The Dutchman found himself relegated to the sidelines for two Premier League games – missing out on wins against Wolves and Aston Villa – owing to a red card picked up in the dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Newcastle back in August.

The former Charlton man has deputised with distinction, performing particularly well in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s right-back slot and impressing commentators with his take on the Scouser’s inverted role.

“Joey G [Gomez] has come in and played a couple of positions unbelievably well and with zero fuss. I love this,” the Dutchman told liverpoolfc.com. “Not only does it bring even more competition for places, it gives us the chance to change games when we need to because it gives us different qualities at different times.”

The Merseysiders are set to take on Leicester City in the Carabao Cup imminently (VIEW TEAM NEWS HERE) with Gomez left out of the squad.

Many a Liverpool fan, including some of us here at Empire of the Kop, had taken the position that the 26-year-old’s time at Liverpool was drawing to an end following a host of inconsistent outings and struggles with injury.

To give credit where credit’s due, we’ve all proved utterly, utterly wrong, as the Englishman has navigated hurdle after hurdle with genuine aplomb.

The biggest feather in his cap, certainly, and it really shouldn’t be overlooked or underestimated given the challenge attached, is his adaptation to a role specifically designed for our No.66’s creative acumen.

Good on Gomez, and hopefully he can keep on showing up his critics as the season wears on and the need for his services arises.

Neil Jones applauded a top-notch display from backup centre-half Joe Gomez in Liverpool’s latest win over West Ham.

The England international was jokingly compared to Sergio Busquets after one remarkable moment in the middle of the park in which he evaded pressure from several opponents before advancing play.

“Moment of the match for me was Joe Gomez turning into Sergio Busquets and taking three out,” the Empire of the Kop columnist spoke on the Echo’s Blood Red podcast.

“But really good and really important for them two [Gomez and Matip] to put in some good performances early in the season.

“You think of Gomez against Aston Villa, the two of them against Newcastle in that tough game.

“They’re under a bit of fire and there are people, and I’m one of them, who really think Liverpool do need to strengthen their defence, or should have strengthened their defence, in the summer, but really good for them to reassure a few people that if they are called upon they can do a more than passable job.”

With Trent Alexander-Arnold still nursing a hamstring injury, it’s expected that the former Charlton Athletic prospect will retain his place in the backline for the foreseeable future.

Joe Gomez proving his worth at Liverpool

In a system that seems tailor-made for our No.66, Gomez deserves a lot of credit for coming in and fulfilling the complex demands of the inverted fullback role.

Whether that’s seen as a viable long-term solution as far as an alternative for the Academy graduate is concerned remains to be seen.

In the meantime, however, it’s reassuring to see the 26-year-old proving his worth amid ongoing concerns over his long-term future at the club.

Keep that up and the dissent that followed the signing of a new five-year deal at Anfield in 2022 will surely die down to the barest of whispers.
