Jarell Quansah has been the breakthrough academy star this season and has continued to take every chance that is handed his way, including in his latest appearance against LASK.

With Sascha Horvath bearing down on goal, the young defender did a great job of slowing him down and directing the Austrian away from Caoimhin Kelleher’s goal.

When the ball then came to Ibrahim Mustapha, the 20-year-old threw himself in the way of the goal-bound effort.

It was a piece of defending that will surely make many Liverpool fans think that we may have already found Virgil van Dijk’s long-term replacement.

Jurgen Klopp was in great spirits after Liverpool recorded a 4-0 victory over LASK and secured our place as top of our Europa League group, although he made sure to praise one man in particular.

Speaking about Jarell Quansah’s performance, the German said: absolutely perfect. Jarell played a super game…

“Jarell played a super game, that’s true. That couldn’t be better news for the club, to be honest. I think before this season a lot of people told us we should buy a centre-half.

“We knew we had Jarell. Did we know that he will show up like this? No, not exactly, but we were pretty hopeful, so the future is bright. It’s cool.”

This push for a new centre-back seems to have been answered by our own academy, which is testament to the hard work that the club is doing.

The presence of the Warrington-born defender may well have saved us millions, with much more to come from him.

Virgil van Dijk will have been rather proud, one might imagine, observing his young protege’s latest performance in the Europa League.

Jarell Quansah played a prominent role in a shutout result secured against Austrian outfit LASK midweek.

It’s one to take with a pinch of salt, given the player he’s being compared to, but the 20-year-old’s superb sliding tackle to deny a genuine goalscoring opportunity had fans online thinking of our Dutch colossus.

Even if he only turns out to be half as good – wow, do we have a quality defender on our hands!

Theo Squires was intrigued by something he noticed on the Liverpool teamsheet that UEFA have given to journalists at tonight’s Europa League game against LASK.

As expected, Jurgen Klopp has made numerous changes, with only Mo Salah and Kostas Tsimikas retained from last weekend’s draw at Manchester City.

The Greece international will play at left-back, although there appears to be some confusion as to who’ll line up at the other side of the defensive quartet.

In the Liverpool Echo‘s live matchday blog (19:10), Squires wrote: “Our UEFA teamsheets have just been handed out, and they have Jarell Quansah at right-back and Joe Gomez in the middle.

“While Quansah can play there, having filled the role at the Academy and made one senior appearance on the flanks as a substitute this season, I suspect they might have got those two the wrong way round tonight.”

READ MORE: ‘Great to see…’ – Liverpool journalist delighted with ‘excellent’ Reds news ahead of kick-off

READ MORE: ‘Few come close’: Paul Merson says 25-y/o Liverpool player is absolutely unstoppable on the ball

As Squires pointed out, Quansah has occasionally played at right-back while progressing through the academy ranks, and he had a fleeting appearance in that position against Brentford earlier this month (Transfermarkt).

However, Gomez is far more accustomed to playing out wide than the 20-year-old, so we also reckon that the UEFA teamsheet got those two players mixed up.

Perhaps it isn’t an error and Klopp has spotted something which has prompted him to deploy a curious tactical switch, although we doubt that he’d experiment to that degree considering that Liverpool still need more points to ensure their progression in the tournament.

Whatever the case might be, we’ll get our definitive answer when the match begins at 8pm UK time.

One of Jarell Quansah’s former coaches felt that, from the moment he first met the Liverpool youngster, he could see there was something special about him.

Danny Ventre worked with the 20-year-old during a loan spell at Bristol Rovers last season, and the Liverpudlian couldn’t have been more impressed by what he saw from the defender both on and off the pitch.

The former Sligo Rovers midfielder told The Redmen TV“As a person you see the young kids come through the door and you always question what they’re going to be like, but since Jarrell walked through the door, you could see there was a presence about him. That’s just as a person.

“He was a great kid. He always said good morning and good afternoon, asking questions. Then into the football, you could just see from the moment he landed onto the pitch his qualities and the attributes he had and the potential [that] he was going to be a future star.”

Quansah only made his senior Liverpool debut three months ago, coming on as a late substitute against Newcastle, but he’s since featured eight more times, starting the last three Europa League games (Transfermarkt).

He’s also been standing out at under-21 level for England, and he looks well poised to deliver upon Ventre’s premonition of him being ‘a future star’.

When we hear of Liverpool defenders spraying pinpoint 60-yard passes from the middle third of the pitch, a certain Trent Alexander-Arnold readily springs to mind.

However, he doesn’t have sole dibs on that category, as Jarell Quansah emulated his Reds teammate while playing for England’s under-21s on Tuesday night.

In the 19th minute of their 3-0 win over Northern Ireland at Goodison Park in a qualifier for the 2025 Euros, the 20-year-old picked out Noni Madueke from just inside the centre circle, with the Chelsea attacker almost at the byline by the time he collected the ball.

The vision from Quansah, and the technique to pick out his teammate, had echoes of a pass that Trent played for England’s senior team in a European qualifier against North Macedonia during the summer.

It was a magnificent moment from the Liverpool centre-back in a match which saw his club colleague Harvey Elliott score twice, with the Reds enjoying a splendid night just across Stanley Park.

You can see Quansah’s pass to Madueke below (from 0:14), via England on YouTube:

Jarell Quansah has set himself the goal of being ‘at least’ on the leading players in the Premier League.

The youngster has been in impressive form for the Reds this term following his surprise promotion from the Academy.

“You look at goals yourself, there is no point in setting goals that you think you could reach. You might as well just set a goal that maybe looks out of reach, but you never know what you can get to,” the 20-year-old was quoted as saying by the Echo.

“So no (this season hasn’t exceeded expectations), because no-one has said Jarell Quansah is one of the best players in the world yet. No-one’s said he’s a top centre-back, no-one’s said he’s all this.

“So until I’m regarded as at least one of the best players in the Premier League, then there is no reason for me to sit on what I’ve got and go, ‘oh, yeah, I’ve played nine games for Liverpool.’ That’s never been the end goal.”

The Englishman has featured in nine games across all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s men in 2023/24. The Reds have won all but one of these clashes – a 3-2 defeat in France to Toulouse; a game in which a late equaliser was overruled by VAR.

Watch out mystery January signing…

There’s still an argument for Liverpool to push for defensive reinforcements given our current lack of left-sided defenders.

That said, having played frequently as the left-sided centre-half in the backline this term, Quansah has made a case of his own to be considered Virgil van Dijk’s backup.

How many other options are there in the market around his age group that would be willing to earn as few minutes whilst also possessing a sizeable talent ceiling?

It has to be a narrow pool, surely?

It might even, dare we say it, encourage our recruitment team to hold off on strengthening that particular area just yet!

Another opportunity in Toulouse?

Quansah was left on the bench until the final half-hour of action last time out in the Europa League against the Ligue 1 outfit.

With our German tactician having experimented with Joe Gomez at left-back in the league, however, we’ll be curious to see whether an opportunity for a start arises in France for our Academy graduate.

He’s one player we most certainly want to take our time with and slowly nurture.

If we can avoid a repeat of the over-reliance we saw occur with Stefan Bajcetic last term, there’s no reason we can’t get the absolute best out of our young starlet.

The biblical weather conditions in which Bournemouth and Liverpool played on Wednesday night could’ve made some players shirk, but Jarell Quansah most certainly didn’t.

Not even Storm Ciaran could quell the 20-year-old colossus at the Vitality Stadium, with the young centre-back being named man of the match, and with good reason.

As per Sofascore, he completed a team-high 86 passes, won four duels, completed two dribbles and made a whopping seven clearances, repelling a number of attacks from the home side on the south coast.

A compilation of Quansah’s best moments against the Cherries has now been shared by X user @reupss19319, and it encapsulates just why the Liverpool defender ended the night being affectionately dubbed ‘Quannavaro‘ in some quarters.

On numerous occasions he got his head firmly to the ball, while he mixed it up nicely between tidy ground passes and midfield-splitting long balls.

Two standout moments were his backflick to escape under pressure from Justin Kluivert, and his late headed clearance to deny what would likely have been a simple finish for Kieffer Moore at the back post.

Can he do it on a wet Wednesday night at Bournemouth? We certainly got our answer!

James Pearce described the 20-year-old’s performance as ‘absolutely outstanding’ on X (formerly Twitter) as the Merseysiders secured passage through to the quarter-finals.

The Academy graduate put in a stellar display against the Cherries, registering seven clearances, two interceptions, a tackle and winning four out of six ground duels, according to stats gathered by Sofascore.

It’s rather remarkable how suddenly our No.78 has risen through the ranks on Merseyside.

We certainly can’t fault Quansah’s consistency this term, with the player proving a more than reliable operator when called upon – no matter the conditions.

We couldn’t be more excited to witness his development over the coming months as part of this increasingly exciting Liverpool outfit.

Liverpool 2.0 indeed – and the Warrington-born defender is very much part of the future of the club.

Mo Salah’s cameo will have most certainly stolen the show after the Egyptian scored Liverpool’s fifth and final goal against Toulouse in their midweek fixture.

Jarell Quansah, however, also impressed with his 23-minute cameo on the pitch, winning all of his ground and aerial duels (2/2), blocking one shot and recording a 93% pass accuracy percentage (27/29), according to Sofascore.

The young centre-back is unlikely to be seen in action again until the Reds’ Carabao Cup meeting with Bournemouth at the start of November.

Another promising showing from Quansah

It’s a little unfair to compare Quansah’s duel success rate with the likes of Endo (66.67%), Gomez (75%) and Matip (28.57%) given the comparatively smaller pool of data.

That said, to come into the game late on and be an assured presence in the heart of the backline against a side that was determined to still have an impact on the game at L4 was more than encouraging.

It’s quite the roster of young talent the Academy is nurturing between the likes of Calum Scanlon, Ben Doak, Luke Chambers and the 20-year-old centre-half!

Jarell Quansah may have not been the defender Liverpool fans were expecting to see compete with the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Co. for minutes, however, he is the one that has nonetheless won over many a plaudit in his breakout campaign.

Jurgen Klopp has already sung the 20-year-old’s praises in 2023/24, notably crediting the defender’s calmness under pressure in a ‘statement’ performance for the 3-1 win over Wolves back in September (via the Daily Mail): “I have to say he did really well. He was good.

“In possession as well he was calm. It was like we had just met in the car park before the game with the organisation in the first-half. But he played really well.”

The stats the Englishman has collected thus far would certainly support that statement, with WhoScored.com’s X account highlighting how few in the way inaccurate passes he’s made in the English top-flight.

Admittedly, we do have to point out that the Academy graduate has only made three appearances in the Premier League in 2023/24 (racking up 115 minutes) with the bulk of his game time (180 minutes) spread between the Europa League and Carabao Cup.

Even when dealing with a small pool of data, it’s still rather impressive how well Quansah’s adapted to the demands of senior competitive football.

It certainly raises questions over our potential need for further defensive reinforcements between now and the end of the window!

The host of replies for his current and former Liverpool teammates shows the support for the youngster in our dressing room, who has impressed in the five appearances he’s made already this season.

After also being a crucial part of younger age groups for the Three Lions, it seems that the central defender will be hoping to continue this progression through the age ranks.

The Warrington-born academy graduate has done little wrong in every opportunity handed to him thus far and he could well prove to be a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad in the coming years.

It’s always exciting to see how young players progress and this is certainly the case of the youngster who spent last season on loan with Joey Barton at Bristol Rovers.

The good times keep coming and let’s hope that they’re here to stay.

Jarell Quansah. What is the limit for Liverpool’s surprise gem?

World-class potential may not necessarily be attached to the 20-year-old Academy graduate, Dominic King was keen to stress, though the Daily Mail journalist made otherwise clear that the youngster has ‘rich potential’ to exploit in his tweet reaction to the Reds’ latest European win.

The Merseyisders most certainly made the affair far more challenging for themselves than was required, though Jurgen Klopp is sure to be pleased with his charges’ efforts after making nine changes to the side that suffered a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham in the most controversial of circumstances.

A genuine gem on our hands?

Questions will be rife over whether we’ve got a genuine gem on our hands or an Academy lad who’s playing out of his skin.

If he keeps delivering such impressive performances on the pitch, however, regardless of whether it comes in the cups or the Europa League, it’s going to become increasingly difficult to describe this as a mere flash in the pan.

Keep on going, Jarell lad. We’re all immensely proud of you.
